Malahat Baig-Amin is a psychotherapist licensed in VA and the District of Columbia.  She received her master’s degree in social work & international social welfare from Columbia University in New York.  Her post-graduate work has involved both national and international experiences.  In the US, she directed a study on immigrant women and health issues focusing on violence against women within the South Asian immigrant community through a collaboration with community-based organizations and academic institutions.  Her international experience includes work on gender and human rights with United Nations agencies.  She has presented at several professional conferences and published in professional and academic journals.  

Ms. Baig-Amin also has a bachelor’s degree in religious studies with a focus on Islamic Studies from California State University.  She spent several years as an active member and teacher at the Islamic Society of Orange County in California.   The combination of her professional training, academic and community-based research and fieldwork in the US and abroad inform her work with clients.  

Ms. Baig-Amin has a private practice with offices in Mclean, Virginia and Washington DC.  She counsels adolescents, adults, couples and families.  She helps clients with depression, anxiety, mood disorders, marital conflict, domestic violence, anger management, trauma, abuse, interpersonal conflict, work issues and adjustment disorders.  She utilizes her knowledge of Islam, multiculturalism and psychology in her practice with her Muslim clients.  She ascribes to an empowerment approach based on a strengths model of treatment to assist clients in overcoming challenges they may face. This approach encompasses psycho-dynamic, cognitive-behavioral therapy and other therapeutic models of treatment appropriate for the issues raised in the process of psychotherapy.  

Ms. Baig-Amin also serves as a consultant and provides consultation and counseling services to international organizations and their employees in the District of Columbia.
